Practicing the Presence of God
I’d like to share with you a small book written over 300 years ago called Practicing the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence. Have you heard of it?
It was a series of conversations and letters written to encourage a friend or another believer. He lived from 1614-1691.
In his very ordinary life as monk who worked in the kitchen, he learned the presence of God was always with him in a very real way.
Here is a quote from Bro. Lawrence, “O my God, since Thou art with me, and I must now, in obedience to Thy commands, apply my mind to these outward things, I beseech Thee to grant me the grace to continue in Thy Presence; and to this end do Thou prosper me with Thy assistance. Receive all my works and possess all my affections.”
Simply put he prays, “I pray for grace to continue in Your presence. Prosper me with Your assistance. Receive all my works. Possess all my affections.”
He learned to live constantly in God’s presence doing all his chores and obligations with God’s help and for His glory. He wanted God to possess all that was dear to him. I encourage you to read this small book. This version opens with a daily devotion for 40 days using his letters. The devotional is followed by the book itself—the 4 conversations and 15 letters Bro. Lawrence wrote.
