Why Do I Walk?
My friends and family know I walk on a regular basis. But, do they know why I walk?
It used to be for exercise. You know, the fast walk. I still get some exercise, but that purpose has become secondary. I really don’t walk fast enough to burn many calories. It is more like a stroll and I tend to pause every once in a while as I focus on a thought or listen.
More importantly, I don’t walk alone. I used to, but over the past few years I’ve had a companion. At first is was a brief encounter, but over time that companion stayed longer and longer until now He is with me the whole walk.
Let me state the truth of the matter. It wasn’t so much that He stayed longer. Rather, I began to sense His presence more and more. I came to realize He was with me all the walk.
I’ve grown so attached to Him that He has become the reason for my walk. And there are frequent pauses as the communication becomes focused. He speaks and I listen or I speak and He listens. To experience this close connection with the great Uncreated One is better than anything in the world.
Occasionally, as life happens, I will miss a day. I know He is always with me, but when it happens that focused encounter is deeply missed.
Prayer– Kind Father, As we tend to our life, may we always be aware of You waiting for us, waiting to share Your thoughts with us, waiting to hear our thoughts. Amen
Words to light your path this week
1 Kings 19:11-13a Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountain and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. So it was, when Elijah heart it….NKJV
Exodus 33:11 So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. NKJV
1 John 1:3b,4 and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full. NKJV
Ephesians 1:6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. NKJV
Quote from The Pursuit of God by A. T. Tozer “It is important that we get still to wait on God. And it is best that we get alone, preferably with our Bible outspread before us. Then if we will we may draw near to God and begin to hear Him speak to us in our hearts. I think for the average person the progression will be something like this: First, a sound as of a Presence walking in the garden. Then a voice, more intelligible, but still far from clear. Then the happy moment when the Spirit begins to illuminate the Scriptures, and that which had been only a sound, or at best a voice, now becomes an intelligible word, warm and intimate and clear as the word of a dear friend. Then will come life and light, and best of all, ability to see and rest in and embrace Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord and All.”
