Feet Washing? – Jesus Taught Us Servanthood
What does feet washing have to do with Christianity? Have you washed any feet lately? I mean other than your own or your children’s feet. What do I mean?
Now, what about feet washing? John 13:1-17
Jesus washed His disciples’ feet. In their country, during that time people walked dusty roads in sandals or barefoot. Their feet got dirty. The polite thing to do when you had company was to offer to wash their feet.
What was Jesus teaching them? Servanthood. He was a picture of humility.
Jesus took on Himself the form of a servant. He laid aside His royalty and deity to humble Himself and became a human. “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.”
Jesus came as a servant. He was our example. He wants us to be a servant like Him.
Have the mind that was in Christ.
Jesus said, “Whatever you do to the least of these you do to me.” If we give a cup of water to someone we give it to Jesus.
Good Works
Paul tells a young man we are to be God’s special people looking for opportunities to do go. Titus 2:14 “…His own special people, zealous for good works.” And in Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
So, have you ‘washed’ any feet lately? In other words, have you served another person by doing something nice for them? Helping them in some small way. People are important to Jesus. How we care for others demonstrates our love for Him.
Humility is very important. First shall be last. Last shall be first. His ways are not our ways. His formula for success is not what is being taught today. Being a servant in our culture is not the way to success. But it is God’s way.
It is truly an awesome experience doing good for someone as if doing it for our Lord. It becomes a joyful experience.
Lord God, my Father, whatever I do, help me to always to it for You.
